Public Housing, Community Policing Strategies for
The 1937 Housing Act provided federal funding for publicly owned and managed housing for low-income families. During the 1970s, many cities throughout the United States were plagued by crime and disorder. Often federally subsidized public housing developments in those cities were significantly impacted by the increase in crime due to a number of factors. The traditional law enforcement response was reactive and had a short-term impact. Community policing, with a problem-solving focus, was introduced as a proactive response with long-term results. This entry describes two key components of an effective community policing program in public housing—partnership and problem solving— and presents a case study of a successful program.
