Clinical training is an organized sequence of learning activities that provides therapeutic skills to trainees for the purpose of evaluation and treatment of individuals with health and/or mental health problems. Standards of clinical practice are developed by professional licensing boards and associations and represent disciplines, such as clinical or counseling psychology, social work, nursing, medicine, or psychiatry. Academic and practice standards guide the trainee toward the development of a professional identity and competency. Each discipline's core values, theories, and principles are taught through course work and applied through supervised experiences with clients/patients in clinical settings. Training outcomes include the trainee's ability to create a therapeutic relationship and provide interventions that will facilitate improved health and/or mental health.
