My first full-time position as a therapist was in a spouse abuse treatment program. Treating court-ordered, mostly resistant clients was a challenge for a neophyte clinician such as myself. In an effort to enhance my skills, I attended a seminar on brief therapy offered by the Palo Alto Mental Research Institute group, whose model is well known for its emphasis on strategic or tactical interventions to facilitate change (cf. Fisch, Weakland, & Segal, 1982).
