DARE
An acronym for the Drug Abuse Resistance Education program. DARE is a national nonprofit organi zation founded in 1983 in Los Angeles, California, by the city's police department. DARE incorporates a curri culum designed to teach young people skills that will help them avoid gang involvement, refrain from drug use, and steer clear of violence. Specially trained police officers conduct DARE classes in schools and classrooms around the country, and the curriculum has been adopted in other nations. DARE instructs students from kindergarten through the 12th grade. Studies regarding the effectiveness of DARE have been inconclusive.
