The ethical and legal responsibilities of a researcher to notify individuals of their rights as research participants, to instruct individuals in the procedures involved with participation, and to obtain permission from individuals to use their data for research or other purposes. When conducting research with minors, parental consent is required, because minors cannot provide informed consent; minors can, however, provide assent, and ethical researchers are obliged to respect and act based on the minor's assent or dissent.
