The process by which the members of a society are hierarchically ordered into various strata or levels. Social stratification can be based on a number of characteristics, including age, ethnicity, gender, power, and wealth. Social stratification both differs and is reinforced by a society's culture. For example, the respect and deference shown to older people in some Asian societies can be contrasted with the emphasis on youth in the United States.
