Role
A set of rights and obligations of people in a social context. Roles are expected behaviors set by society. They relay social status. Norms define how a person acts in a given situation.
Role theory studies how one develops or adopts a certain role, whether through the environment, social position, others' expectations (labeling theory), the influence of society (structuralist), individual responses to behavior (symbolic interactionist), or roles in the organization. Role conflict arises when a person is forced to take on two different and incompatible roles at the same time.
