One of the three core parts of Sigmund Freud's theory of the psyche in conjunction with the ego and superego. Originally derived from the German word Es, the id resides in the unconscious and is the driving force behind instinctual urges, such as food, sex, or aggressive impulses. The base of the libido, the id, is governed by the pleasure principle, which seeks to maximize pleasure by immediate gratification of its urges. For more information, see Freud (2000a).
