Early media coverage of the 2016 presidential campaign portrayed it as a freak show. That was not surprising. There was the video showing a candidate who fired a machine gun in order to cook the bacon he had wrapped around its barrel. Another candidate was briefly attacked by a bald eagle while filming a campaign ad.
