Early media coverage of the 2016 presidential campaign portrayed it as a freak show. That was not surprising. There was the video showing a candidate who fired a machine gun in order to cook the bacon he had wrapped around its barrel. Another candidate was briefly attacked by a bald eagle while filming a campaign ad. There was the candidate whose private cell phone number was given out by a rival and who responded by setting fire to his flip phone. And then, of course, came the candidate—a major-party nominee for president—with the aerodynamically implausible hair style and the vulgar language.
