There comes a time in the life of every governor when he or she leaves office. Most leave voluntarily, some not so voluntarily. Either way, their paths continue in one venue or another. A number remain in their states, pursuing careers or enjoying retirement. A few wander off and then return home, like Mike Hayden (R-KS) after a brief tour as assistant secretary of the Interior Department in Washington, D.C. Since coming back to Kansas, he has been in the cabinets of three governors and at one point headed the agency established under his policy leadership as governor from 1987 to 1991.
