Program evaluation is important. It concerns the means by which society provides itself services unavailable through market mechanisms. It deals with topics as diverse as public assistance, environmental protection, public safety, national defense, education, and disease prevention. Effectively carrying out these and the other activities of public enterprise is vital because the impacts are widespread in society.
