Political Status: Independent sovereign state, under papal temporal government; international status governed by the Lateran Treaty with Italy of February 11, 1929; constitution of June 7, 1929, superseded by a New Fundamental Law signed by the pope on November 26, 2000, with effect from February 22, 2001.

Area: 0.17 sq. mi. (0.44 sq. km).

Population: 825 (2019E—Vatican). Citizenship is by appointment, not birthright. Once an appointment is over, Italian citizenship is usually bestowed. The Vatican is predominately male; approximately 30 percent of the population are women.

Official Language: Latin. (Italian is the working language.)
