Political Status: Former British dependency; independent with “special membership” in the Commonwealth since October 1, 1978.

Land Area: 10 sq. mi. (26 sq. km).

Resident Population: 11,000 (2020E—UN); 11,342 (2020E—U.S. Census).

Major Urban Center (2018E)—UN: VAIAKU (Funafuti, 6,300).

Official Language: English (Tuvaluan is widely spoken).

Monetary Unit: Australian dollar (market rate September 30, 2020: 1.41 dollar = $1US). The Tuvaluan dollar, introduced in 1977, is used largely for numismatic purposes (market rate November 1, 2013: 1.06 dollar = $1US).

Sovereign: Queen ELIZABETH II.

Governor General: Teniku TALESI; appointed acting governor general in August 2019 to succeed Iakopa ITALELI.

Prime Minister: Kausea NATANO; elected by Parliament on September 19, 2019, succeeding Enele SOPOAGA, following elections on September 9, 2019.
