Political Status: Independent monarchy functioning under a constitution approved by popular referendum on August 19, 2007, validated by the Constitutional Drafting Assembly on August 21, and promulgated on August 24. The constitution was suspended following a military coup on May 22, 2014, but replaced by a new constitution approved by referendum on August 7, 2016, and came into effect on April 6, 2017; executive and legislative authority was still vested in the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) until a general election was held on March 24, 2019, and military rule formally ended on July 15.
