Note: Alessandro Cardelli (San Marino Christian Democratic Party) and Mirko Dolcini (Tomorrow-Free Movement) were elected captains regent and took office on October 1, 2020. Cardelli, age 29, became the youngest head of state in the world at the time, and the only one under the age of 30.

Political Status: Independent republic dating from the early Middle Ages; under multiparty parliamentary regime.

Area: 23.6 sq. mi. (61 sq. km).
