Republic of Moldova
Note: In the second round of presidential balloting on November 15, 2020, Maia Sandu (Action and Solidarity Party) secured 57.7. percent of the vote, defeating incumbent Igor Dodon (independent), who won 42.3 percent. Sandu was inaugurated on December 24, becoming Moldova’s first woman president. On December 31, Aureliu Ciocoi (independent) was appointed acting prime minister, following the resignation of Ion Chicu.
Political Status: Formerly the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic, a constituent republic of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics; declared independence as the Republic of Moldova on August 27, 1991; became sovereign member of the Commonwealth of Independent States on December 21, 1991; new constitution approved on July 28, 1994, and entered into force on August 27.
