Note: The Homeland Union was first in parliamentary elections on October 11 and 25, 2020, with 50 seats, followed by the Farmer’s and Greens with 32 seats. The remaining 59 seats were split between eight other parties. The Homeland Union, Liberal Movement and Freedom parties formed a coalition government with independent Ingrida Šimonytė as prime minister. She assumed office on December 11.
Political Status: Independence from Russia declared February 16, 1918; absorption of independent state by the Soviet Union on August 3, 1940, repudiated on March 11, 1990, by the Lithuanian Supreme Council; independence recognized by the USSR State Council on September 6, 1991; current constitution approved by referendum of October 25, 1992.
