Note: Parliamentary elections held between October 26 and November 4, 2020, resulted in opposition candidates winning 24 of the 50 contested seats. The remaining posts were secured by pro-government candidates. The balloting resulted in more than two-thirds of incumbents being turned out of office, including the sole woman member of parliament. The parliament rejected the existing government, forcing its resignation, but the emir reappointed incumbent prime minister Sheikh Sabah Khaled al-Hamad al-Sabah on January 24, 2021.
Political Status: Constitutional hereditary emirate; independent since June 19, 1961, save for occupation by Iraq from August 2, 1990, to February 26, 1991; draft constitution approved by the sovereign on November 1, 1962, and entered into force January 29, 1963.
