Political Status: Became an independent member of the Commonwealth on February 18, 1965; republican regime instituted April 24, 1970; Gambian–Senegalese Confederation of Senegambia, formed with effect from February 1, 1982, and dissolved as of September 30, 1989; most recent constitution approved by national referendum on August 8, 1996.

Area: 4,361 sq. mi. (11,295 sq. km).

Population: 2,280,102 (2018E—World Bank); 2,100,000 (2020E—U.S. Census).

Major Urban Center (2018E—UN): BANJUL (437,000 urban area).

Official Language: English.

Monetary Unit: Dalasi (market rate September 30, 2020: 51.00 dalasis = $1US).

President: Adama BARROW (National People’s Party, elected as member of the United Democratic Party); popularly elected on December 1, 2016, for a five-year term, and sworn in on January 19, 2017, to succeed Yahya JAMMEH (Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and Construction).
