Political Status: Independent republic founded in 1902; Marxist-inspired regime established January 1, 1959; designated a Communist system in December 1961; constitution adopted February 16, 1976; present constitution adopted on April 10, 2019.

Area: 42,803 sq. mi. (110,860 sq. km).

Population: 11,350,000 (2020E—World Bank); 11,059,062 (2020E—U.S. Census).

Major Urban Centers (2017E—UN): HAVANA (2,130,081, Santiago de Cuba (433,099), Camagüey (306,183), Holguín (294,002), Santa Clara (216,056), Guantánamo (216,609).

Official Language: Spanish.

Monetary Unit: Peso (official rate September 30, 2020: 1 peso = $1US [a 10 percent Cuban tax is also added when converting directly from dollars to pesos]). There are two pesos used in Cuba.
