Political Status: Independent parliamentary monarchy; first formal constitution adopted June 2, 2008.

Population: 844,000 (2020E—World Bank); 774,410 (2020E—U.S. Census).

Major Urban Center (2017E—UN): THIMPHU (114,551).

Official Language: Dzongkha.

Monetary Unit: Ngultrum (official rate September 30, 2020: 73.72 ngultrum = $1US). The ngultrum is at par with the Indian rupee, which circulates freely within the country.

Monarch: Dasho Jigme Khesar Namgyel WANGCHUK; proclaimed king (Druk Gyalpo) on December 14, 2006, upon the voluntary abdication of his father, Jigme Singye WANGCHUK; crowned as constitutional monarch on November 6, 2008.

Heir Apparent: Jigme Namgyel WANGCHUK.

Prime Minister: Lotay TSHERING (Bhutan United Party); appointed on October 30, 2018, following the National Assembly election of October 18; assumed office on November 7, succeeding Tshering TOBGAY (People’s Democratic Party).
