Political Status: Independent state proclaimed in 1804; republic established in 1859; military-backed regime installed following coup of September 30, 1991; constitutional government reinstated on November 8, 1994.

Area: 10,714 sq. mi. (27,750 sq. km).

Population: 11,113,000 (2018E—World Bank); 10,788,440 (2018E—U.S. Census).

Major Urban Centers (2018E—UN): PORT-AU-PRINCE (2,700,000).

Official Languages: French, Creole. (It has been estimated that as much as 95 percent of the population is fluent only in Creole, although French remains the language of government and education.)

Monetary Unit: Gourde (market rate October 19, 2018: 70.45 gourdes = $1US).

President: Jove MOÏSE (Tet Kale Party); elected on November 20, 2016, and inaugurated on February 17, 2017, as president in succession to acting president Jocelerme PRIVERT (Inite).
