Note: In balloting on September 15 and October 18, 2018, the Druk Nyamrup Tshogpa (DNT) party surprised observers by securing 30 seats, followed by the Bhutan Peace and Prosperity, with 17 seats. The ruling People’s Democratic Party was third and lost all of its 32 seats. DNT leader Lotay Tshering was appointed prime minister on November 7, 2018.

Political Status: Independent parliamentary monarchy; first formal constitution adopted June 2, 2008.

Area: 18,147 sq. mi. (47,000 sq. km).

Population: 817,000 (2018E—World Bank); 766,397 (2018E—U.S. Census).

Major Urban Center (2014E—UN): THIMPHU (152,000).

Official Language: Dzongkha.

Monetary Unit: Ngultrum (official rate October 19, 2018: 73.47 ngultrum = $1US). The ngultrum is at par with the Indian rupee, which circulates freely within the country.
