Note: In general elections on December 30, 2018, the Awami League, led by incumbent prime minister Sheikh Hasina Wajed, won a landslide victory with 76.9 percent of the vote, securing 257 seats. Hasina was subsequently reappointed for a fourth term as prime minister.
Political Status: Independent state proclaimed March 26, 1971; de facto independence achieved December 16, 1971; republican constitution of December 16, 1972, suspended following coup of March 24, 1982, but restored on November 10, 1986; parliamentary system (abandoned in favor of presidential system in January 1975) restored by referendum of September 15, 1991.
Area: 55,598 sq. mi. (143,999 sq. km).
Population: 166,368,000 (2018E—UN); 159,453,001 (2018E—U.S. Census).
Major Urban Centers (2016E—UN, metropolitan area): DHAKA (18,237,000), Chittagong (4,640,000), Khulna (1,336,000).
