The third largest and second most populous of the former Soviet republics, Ukraine is bordered on the north by Belarus, on the east by Russia, on the south by the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov, and on the west by Moldova, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, and Poland. The population is approximately 78 percent Ukrainian and 18 percent Russian, with no other group greater than 1 percent. The ethnic Russian population is located primarily in eastern and southern Ukraine, where there is significant sentiment in favor of the reestablishment of greater economic, political, and military integration with Russia.
