Note: Prime Minister Mohammed Salem Basindwa (General People’s Congress) resigned in order to facilitate a power-sharing agreement with Houthi rebels in September 2014. He was replaced by Khaled Bahah (non-party) on November 9. President Abd Rabbo Mansour Hadi resigned along with Bahah and his cabinet on January 22, 2015, after Houthi rebels seized control of strategic portions of the capital.
Political Status: Independent Islamic Arab republic established by the merger of the former Yemen Arab Republic (North Yemen) and the People’s Democratic Republic of Yemen (South Yemen) on May 22, 1990.
