Note: In the elections for the 26-member Legislative Assembly on November 27, 2014, the Democratic Party of the Friendly Islands (DPFI) was credited with securing 9 of the 17 people’s representatives’ seats, with the other 8 seats going to independents. (Nine seats reserved for nobles were also elected by the nobles on the same day.) One of the independent people’s representatives subsequently announced his alignment with the DPFI, giving the DPFI control of 10 seats. After extended negotiations with the remaining independents, DPFI leader and longtime democracy campaigner ‘Akilisi Pohiva on December 30 was elected as the country’s first “commoner” prime minister by a vote of 15–11 in the assembly.
