Political Status: Independent monarchy functioning under a constitution approved by popular referendum on August 19, 2007, validated by the Constitutional Drafting Assembly on August 21, and promulgated on August 24. The constitution was suspended following a military coup on May 22, 2014; executive and legislative authority is currently vested in the National Council for Peace and Order.
