Note: Despite ongoing international support for his administration, Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe resigned on December 14, 2014, in the wake of widespread demonstrations protesting the continued delay in the holding of legislative elections. President Michel Martelly, whose resignation the opposition also demanded, on December 21 appointed Public Health and Population Minister Florence Duperval Guillaume as interim prime minister, and on December 25 the president nominated Evans Paul, a former mayor of Port-au-Prince and former presidential candidate, to serve as permanent prime minister. However, Paul’s appointment required legislative approval, which had not been achieved as of the end of the year. Negotiations continued in an effort to resolve the deteriorating political situation.
