Political Status: Independent sovereign state, under papal temporal government; international status governed by the Lateran Treaty with Italy of February 11, 1929; constitution of June 7, 1929, superseded by a New Fundamental Law signed by the pope on November 26, 2000, with effect from February 22, 2001.

Area: 0.17 sq. mi. (0.44 sq. km).

Population: 832 (2012E—UN; 2012E—U.S. Census). There are numerous lay workers, most of them Italian citizens, who live outside the Vatican.

Official Language: Latin (Italian is the working language).

Monetary Unit: Euro (market rate November 5, 2012: 0.78 euro = $1US). On December 29, 2000, the Vatican and Italy signed an agreement permitting Vatican adoption of the euro, authorization having already been granted in principle by the European Union. Since introduction of ...
