Note: A new federal parliament was established on August 20, 2012, as part of a broad peace agreement. Members of the parliament were chosen by tribal and clan leaders and approved by a federal transition committee. Also on August 20, incumbent president Sheikh Sharif Ahmed (Alliance for the Liberation and Reconstruction of Somalia) left office and was succeeded on an interim basis by the speaker of the parliament, Muse Hassan Abdulle (nonparty), who served for eight days until another interim president, Mohamed Osman Jawari (nonparty), took over. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud (Peace and Development Party) subsequently won the second round of indirect presidential balloting on September 10.
