Note: In the wake of revolutions in Tunisia and Egypt, a string of protests spread throughout Yemen in January 2011. Thousands of Yemeni demonstrated against government corruption and widespread poverty. By January 27 over 16,000 protesters had gathered in the capital of Sana’a, calling for President Ali Abdullah SALEH to resign from his 30-year term. On February 2 Saleh offered to not seek reelection in 2013, but protesters rejected this concession, and their numbers continued to grow in the capital. For the next two months, protests sparked in several cities throughout Yemen.
