Note: After only three months in office, Prime Minister Maatia Toafa lost a confidence motion in the Parliament on December 21, 2010, by one vote after Willy Telavi, the minister for home affairs, withdrew his support for the government. Telavi was elected as the new prime minister on December 24 (by a one-vote margin over Enele Sopoaga, the incumbent minister for foreign affairs, environment, and labor) and subsequently named a new cabinet.
Political Status: Former British dependency; independent with “special membership” in the Commonwealth since October 1, 1978.
Land Area: 10 sq. mi. (26 sq. km.).
Resident Population: 9, 561 (2002C); 11, 100 (2010E). Both figures are exclusive of more than 3, 000 Tuvaluans living overseas.
