Note: In the October 2, 2010, balloting for the Saeima, the Unity bloc (led by Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis) secured a plurality of 33 seats, followed by the Harmony Center, 29 seats; the Greens’ and Farmers’ Union (ZZS), 22; the electoral coalition of All for Latvia and For Fatherland and Freedom/LNNK, 8; and For a Good Latvia, 8. On November 3 Dombrovskis formed a new government comprising Unity and the ZZS.

Political Status: Absorption of independent state by the Soviet Union on August 5, 1940, repudiated by the Latvian Supreme Council on May 4, 1990; resumption of full sovereignty declared August 21, 1991, and accepted by USSR State Council on September 6.

Area: 24, 938 sq. mi. (64, 589 sq. km.).
