Note: On November 25, 2010, the South Korean minister of defense, Gen. Kim Tae Young, resigned, taking responsibility for a surprise shelling of Yeonpyeong island by North Korean forces on November 23. Four South Koreans died and about 20 were injured in the attack on the island, one of five held by South Korea near the Northern Limit Line (NLL) that defines the current boundary between North and South in the Yellow Sea. North Korea, which does not recognize the NLL, said the shelling was in response to a live-fire exercise, directed toward the sea, that had been conducted earlier the same day by marines stationed on Yeonpyeong.
