Note: Following legislative elections for the House of Representatives on November 9, 2010, Prime Minister Samir al-Rifai resigned on November 21, but was reappointed prime minister of a reshuffled cabinet on November 24. Following widespread protests over unemployment, King Abdullah II dismissed Rifai and the cabinet on February 1, 2011, and designated former prime minister Marouf al-Bakhet to form a new government.
Political Status: Independent constitutional monarchy established May 25, 1946; present constitution adopted January 8, 1952.
