Note: In a complicated and confusing series of events, President Rafael Correa on September 30, 2010, was attacked by tear gas while trying to leave an impromptu meeting with some 800 police officers who were protesting recent austerity measures that had blocked their salary increases. The police subsequently barricaded the hospital in which Correa was being treated and refused to permit him to leave. Elite security forces finally rescued Correa in a sniper battle that left five people dead. The president charged that he had been a victim of a coup attempt, but analysts noted that the army had remained loyal throughout the police uprising.
