Note: Prime Minister Edward Natapei announced a major cabinet overhaul on November 17, 2009. Most notably, he dropped the ministers from the National Unity Party and the Vanuatu Republican Party, replacing them with members of the opposition, including Sato Kilman, theretofore the leader of the opposition in Parliament, who was named deputy prime minister. The new government reportedly enjoyed the support of 33 legislators, enabling Natapei to easily survive several subsequent non-confidence motions.

Political Status: Formerly the New Hebrides; became the Anglo-French Condominium of the New Hebrides in 1906; present name adopted upon becoming an independent member of the Commonwealth on July 30, 1980.

Area: 4,647 sq. mi. (12,035 sq. km.).

Population: 186,678 (1999C); 233,000 (2008E).
