Note: Marian Lupu, the presidential candidate of the governing Alliance for European Integration (APIE), failed to gain the 61 votes needed for election in balloting in the Parliament on November 10 and December 7, 2009. Consequently, Acting President Mihai Ghimpu remained in the post until new parliamentary elections are held (constitutionally precluded until mid-2010) or until the constitution is revised (as proposed by the APIE) to permit presidential election by majority vote in the Parliament.
