Note: President Litokwa Tomeing was ousted by losing a confidence motion by a vote of 17–15 in the House of Representatives on October 21, 2009, following a prolonged power struggle with former president Kessai Note. House Speaker Jurelang Zedkaia was inaugurated as the new president on November 2 after defeating Note in a House vote for the position by a vote of 17–15. Meanwhile, Alvin Jacklick succeeded Zedkaia as speaker.
Political Status: Sovereign state in free association with the United States (which retains authority with regard to defense) since October 21, 1986.
