Note: Ousted President Mel Zelaya returned to Honduras clandestinely on September 21, 2009, and was granted sanctuary in the Brazilian embassy. The two competing political camps in late October reached an agreement designed to resolve the crisis by, among other things, authorizing the National Congress to determine whether Zelaya should be reinstated in the presidency for the remainder of his term. In controversial presidential balloting on November 29, Porfirio Lobo Sosa of the National Party (PN) was elected with 56 percent of the vote, followed by Elvin Santos (who ran as the candidate of the Liberal Party [PL] despite a call for a boycott of the election by Zelaya and his supporters) with 38 percent.
