Note: On January 12, 2010, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck near Port-au-Prince, causing the worst humanitarian crisis in modern Haitian history and destroying a large number of buildings and dwellings. An estimated 230,000 were killed, 300,000 injured, and more than 1 million left homeless. A massive international relief effort was subsequently undertaken, led by former United States presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush.
Note: Citing a lack of economic improvement, the Senate on October 30, 2009, voted to oust Prime Minister Michèle Pierre-Louis.
