Note: On December 30, 2009, Governor General Michaëlle Jean suspended Parliament (until March 3, 2010) at the request of Prime Minister Stephen Harper. The prorogation effectively halted an inquiry that had threatened the government into allegations that Canadian troops had handed off detainees in Afghanistan to harsh treatment by Afghan authorities.
Political Status: Granted Dominion status under the British North America Act of 1867; recognized as autonomous state within the Commonwealth in 1931; constitution “patriated” as of April 17, 1982.

Population: 31,612,897 (2006C); 33,334,000 (2008E). The 2006 figure is unadjusted for underenumeration (the unadjusted number in 2001 rose by 3.1 percent after adjustment). The 2008 figure is extrapolated from government estimates, including adjustments for underenumeration.
