Note: In final results of the legislative balloting on September 28, 2008, the Austrian Social Democratic Party won a plurality of the seats in the National Council (Nationalrat) with 29.3 percent of the national vote (57 seats); the Austrian People's Party won 26 percent (51); the Freedom Party of Austria, 17.5 percent (34); the Alliance for the Future of Austria, 10.7 percent (21); and The Greens, 10.4 percent (20). A new SPÖ-ÖVP coalition government was sworn in on December 2 with the SPÖ's Werner Faymann as the new chancellor.
Political Status: Federal republic established in 1918; reestablished in 1945 under Allied occupation; independence restored under Four-Power Treaty of July 27, 1955.
