Established: By statute signed in New York, United States, October 26, 1956, effective July 29, 1957. A working relationship with the United Nations was approved by the General Assembly on November 14, 1957.
Purpose: To “seek to accelerate and enlarge the contribution of atomic energy to peace, health and prosperity throughout the world” and to ensure that such assistance “is not used in such a way as to further any military purposes.”
Headquarters: Vienna, Austria.
