Established: By treaty signed August 12, 1980, in Montevideo, Uruguay, effective March 18, 1981, as successor to the Latin American Free Trade Association.
Purpose: To promote the expansion of regional integration, both economic and social, and ultimately to establish a Latin American common market.
Headquarters: Montevideo, Uruguay.
