International Organization of the Francophonie (OIF)
Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie
Established: As La Francophonie under a charter that was adopted on December 18, 1996, in Marrakesh, Morocco, by a Ministerial Conference of francophone states and then endorsed on November 15, 1997, by the Seventh Francophone Summit, held in Hanoi, Vietnam; present name adopted by the Ministerial Conference of the Francophonie on December 4–5, 1998, in Bucharest, Romania.
Purpose: To facilitate the exchange of cultural, educational, scientific, and technological information, particularly but not exclusively among countries with French in common usage; to promote cultural and linguistic diversity, including the teaching of French; to encourage democracy and respect for human rights; to advance the economic development of member states.
Headquarters: Paris, France.
