Established: Original incarnation created by Customs Convention signed September 5, 1944, in London, England; entered into force November 16, 1944, becoming fully effective January 1, 1948. Present organization created by treaty signed February 3, 1958, in The Hague, Netherlands, effective November 1, 1960.

Purpose: To develop closer economic links among member states; to ensure a coordinated policy in economic, environmental, financial, tourist, transport, and social fields; and to promote a common policy in foreign trade, particularly with regard to the exchange of goods and services with developing countries.

Headquarters: Brussels, Belgium.

Principal Organs: Committee of Ministers, Interparliamentary Consultative Council, Council of the Economic Union, Economic and Social Advisory Council, Benelux Court of Justice, General Secretariat.
