Note: Hamas formally declared the six-month cease-fire with Israel ended as of December 19, 2008, arguing that Israel had not lived up to its agreements regarding the truce, which Hamas had also sporadically violated. After Hamas rocket attacks from the Gaza Strip into Israel intensified, Israel on December 29 launched a series of massive air strikes against suspected Hamas security compounds in Gaza. More than 300 Palestinians, including some civilians, were reportedly killed in the first days of the campaign. Israeli reservists were subsequently called up for a possible ground incursion into Gaza.
