Note: In early elections to the Grand and General Council on November 9, 2008, the parties belonging to the center-right Pact for San Marino (PSM, including the San Marino Christian Democratic Party [PDCS], Europopulists for San Marino [running primarily on the PDCS list], Popular Alliance, Sammarinese Union of Moderates, and Freedom List) won 35 seats, compared to 25 seats for the left-wing Reforms and Freedom Alliance (Party of Socialists and Democrats, United Left, and Center Democrats). A new PSM cabinet was approved by the council on December 4.

Political Status: Independent republic dating from the early Middle Ages; under multiparty parliamentary regime.

Area: 23.6 sq. mi. (61 sq. km.).
